Soldiers in the First World War suffered in a myriad of ways. Something that soldiers from all wars in history can experience is losing a brother-in-arms in war, which the average frontline soldier from the First World War frequently suffered from.

Danish-German soldier Hans Petersen from the 86th Füsilier Infantry Regiment reported on the loss of a comrade at Moulin-sous-Touvent on January 7, 1915, today 109 years ago. Translated by myself:

"7th January 1915.
. 
On this day, one of my great comrades fell, Lorens Meyer from Flensburg. One hour before he was killed, I visited him in his dug-out to borrow my dear "Flensburg Newspaper" from him. Lorens was a fine Danish man. He was tough, and with his chubby and red cheeks and his bold character, he was a prime example of a good Dane.

He was troubled a lot by participating in this war and repeatedly posed the question: "How long will this war last? Who will win? What shall our destiny be after the war?"
. 
He suffered more and more for every day that passed. An hour following my visit he was struck by shrapnel to the head and died at once. He fell upon returning from his duty on the frontlines of Moulin-sous-Touvent, a duty which he took care of so conscientiously, despite personally being opposed to the war.
. 
We buried him in the town of Moulin-sous-Touvent where the birds sit and sing above his grave. With the face turned northwards towards his home and loved ones, he rests here.
. 
Sigh! God recalled him in the midst of his youth. Now we mourn him, he was for all of us an affectionate comrade. All honour to his memory!"

The Rape of Tamar The story of the rape of Tamar, daughter of King David, by Amnon, her half-brother (2 Samuel 13) is  told in the wake of the king's sins of adultery and murder . When Tamar attends Amnon, who feigns illness, he seizes her and rapes her, and then banishes her from the room. Classical formal features—solid forms, careful balance, and harmonious colors—temper the violence of this scene, which probably represents the biblical Old Testament character Tamar about to be raped by her half-brother Amnon. A freeze‑frame effect is achieved through staid yet dramatic gestures that Le Sueur derived from classical sculpture. They align perfectly with how fellow painter Charles Le Brun would soon theorize the best methods of representing historical narrative. Shortly after this work was painted, in 1648, both artists became founding members of the French Royal Academy, which sought to elevate the perception of painters’ intellectual abilities and social position.

Hasanlu lovers The  Hasanlu Lovers  are a pair of human remains found at the Teppe Hasanlu archaeological site, located in the Naqadeh in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran. Around 800 BCE, the city of Hasanlu, located in north-western Iran, was destroyed by an unknown invader. Inhabitants were slain and left where they fell. In 1973, the lovers were discovered by a team of archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania led by Robert H. Dyson. The two  human skeletons  were found together in a bin during  excavations , seemingly embracing at the time of death, with no other objects except a  stone slab  under the head of one skeleton. They died together around 800 BCE, during the last destruction of the Hasanlu. Approximately 246 skeletons were found at the site altogether. How the lovers died and ended up in the bin is still under speculation but both skeletons lack evidence...
